Peter Matthiessen

Peter Matthiessen published his first short story, in The Atlantic Monthly, before he graduated from Yale University in 1950. Besides At Play in the Fields of the Lord, which was nominated for the National Book Award, he has written seven novels, notably Far Tortuga, Killing Mister Watson, and Bone by Bone. In his parallel career as a naturalist and explorer, he has produced numerous acclaimed works of nonfiction, among them The Tree Where Man Was Born, also nominated for the National Book Award, and The Snow Leopard, which won it. Mr. Matthiessen was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1974.
