The New Generation of Classic Short Stories

Mikhail Baryshnikov

Born in Riga, Latvia, in 1948, Mikhail Baryshnikov is one of the greatest ballet dancers of his time. After commencing a promising career with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, he came to the West in 1974, settling in New York City as a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. In 1979 he joined the New York City Ballet to study with master choreographer George Balanchine, but returned to the ABT a year later as its artistic director; there for the next decade he nurtured a new generation of dancers and choreographers. From 1990 to 2002 he was artistic director of the White Oak Dance Project, a touring company he cofounded with Mark Morris; and in 2005 he launched the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City. Mr. Baryshnikov is also an Academy Award–nominated actor, and a photographer whose work has been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide.
